Living & Lifestyle insights for April

Insights and tips for better living & lifestyle in Mexico

Easter Holidays — Easter, in Mexico termed as Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is one of Mexico’s ‘big three’ holidays, alongside Christmas and Día de los Muertos. We have tips for traveling during this busy holiday period, and learn why it’s a good time to visit the capital. Read our articles and guides about Easter in Mexico.

Easter Holy Week Dates in Mexico for 2026

Easter Sunday is observed on the first Sunday after the Paschal Full Moon—that is the first Sunday following the Full Moon that occurs on or after the spring equinox in March.

Maundy (Holy) Thursday and Easter Friday fall on April 2nd & 3rd this year.

Easter Sunday is observed on April 5th this year.

Easter Week holidays in Mexico traditionally begin the week before Good Friday and extend to the end of the weekend after Easter Sunday.

Easter road trips in Mexico
Major roads and highways get busy across Mexico during the Easter holiday period, especially major trunk routes connecting the USA with Mexico, and all roads connecting Mexico City to key regions in the provinces, particularly roads leading out from the capital:

 • north to Querétaro/Guanajuato;
 • west to Morelia and Guadalajara;
 • south to Cuernavaca, Tepoztlán, and Acapulco; and
 • east/southeast to Veracruz, Puebla, and the Yucatán peninsula.

When the Easter holiday draws to a close roads into Mexico City on these same routes become severely congested.

Mexperience publishes extensive guides and articles to help you plan and prepare for your road trips in Mexico.

Springtime Spanish lessons online
If you plan to live in Mexico —or are living here already— we recommend you make time to learn or improve your Spanish language skills. Being able to converse with others in Spanish will enhance every encounter and enrich your experience of being here. Reasons for learning Spanish are numerous; our PinPoint Spanish series helps you delve into the nuances of Mexican Spanish, and our language learning associates offer customized Spanish lessons online.

Dealing with the Dry Season
March was characteristically windy and also surprisingly wet across some parts of the mainland this year. With spring now taking hold, the inevitable ‘long dry’ spell will unfold during April and May: months that tend to become hot, dusty, and brittle before the rains return to refresh and replenish the landscape in late spring. Water use at home ought to be conserved. We have tips for living well through the dry season in Mexico.

Don’t miss the Dry Season’s sunsets!

Sunsets in Mexico are spectacular this time of year, as the dry landscapes lend their dust to rise high into the atmosphere and blend with setting sun rays beaming across clear skies to create compositions of extraordinary late evening light.

Residency update: Time scales
In recent years, Mexico’s immigration offices have become very efficient at processing residency applications. Some offices process filings the same day on some occasions, and this has created an expectation that residency procedures here are akin to a drive-thru service—especially by people who only fly-in to process their visa exchange and renewals and then leave Mexico. We publish a guide to typical timescales and keep this updated, based on our associates’ recent cases.

Residency update: Tighter criteria at some offices
Related to time scales, our associates are reporting that in addition to longer wait times for some procedures, some immigration offices are beginning to tighten up their criteria, for example in Oaxaca applicants are being asked to re-prove their income in addition showing proof of address. These stricter criteria are not universally applied at all offices, but be aware that the office you file at reserves the right to ask for additional information and documentation (that typically is not sought) when you file any residency application, exchange, renewal, or change of residency status request.

Applying for residency and managing your residency status
The financial criteria to qualify for residency in Mexico this year have remained broadly unchanged from 2025 levels. When you intend to apply for the first time (or re-apply), our guide to applying for residency in Mexico gives a detailed summary of the process. If you already have a residency card, learn about the renewal rules and process for existing residency card holders. If your residency card has expired, read this. If your card is lost or damaged, read this.

The Copper Canyon through the seasons
Seasonally, May and June tend to be the driest months in the canyons. July to November are months when the rains are most abundant and the canyons’ flora show-off their deepest greens. Between December and May, the flora’s colors are in transition between the wet and dry seasons. Read our detailed guide about Mexico’s Copper Canyon. Enjoy the dramatic landscapes and breath-taking natural scenery on a custom tours fully organized by our travel associate, so that you can spend your time absorbing the experience.

Minding your manners
Learning about and respecting local customs and social practices is an integral part of assimilating a new lifestyle in a country that is foreign to your home culture. Our guide to social etiquette in Mexico helps you to navigate Mexico’s contemporary social etiquette and get acquainted with the social graces practiced here. It can also help to prevent you from making embarrassing or unnecessary faux pas.

Reminder about official documents
When you’re filing official documents in Mexico that were originally issued outside of Mexico —for example, Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates you will need to get these Apostilled and Translated into Spanish by an authorized translator.

Mexican cellphones registration

On December 8, 2025, the Mexican government announced that new rules require every Mexican cellphone number (contract and pre-pay) to be associated with verified and registered user.

This article shares details about the registration rules and process, and we are keeping it regularly updated as new information becomes available. The deadline date is June 30, 2026. Telephone companies have been ordered to suspend all lines not registered on July 1.

Imported goods and foodie treats
Mexico’s cuisine is varied, colorful, and bursting with flavor, although when living abroad most people at least occasionally enjoy a ‘taste of home.’ When you’re looking for imported food items, you’ll usually have to attend one of the specialist retail supermarkets that stock fancy goods, where you’ll find a wide assortment of popular US, European, and Asian foods and ingredients. Imported foods (and wine, whether imported or Mexican) are well-known to trade at a premium in Mexico so it’s best not to cavil about the prices.

Health & Medical Insurance Options — Summary

Long-term residents in Mexico may arrange a local private health insurance plan, known in Spanish as seguro de gastos medicos mayores, or might choose to enroll in Mexico’s healthcare system, IMSS. Some long-term residents with health plans in the US choose instead to buy medical evacuation insurance.

People on (frequent) short-stay visits to Mexico can arrange for medical expenses to be covered during their stays with insurance coverages for short-term trips not lasting more than 90 days.

For extended stays in Mexico up to six months, our article about coverages for extended stays in Mexico provides guidance about getting coverage for emergency medical expenses.

The post The Journey to Finding Your Place in Mexico first appeared on Mexperience.]]>
It requires courage to emigrate and start a new life in a foreign country, and moving to Mexico is no exception.

The things you need to live well, to live comfortably, and to live simply are here. They probably aren’t in the shapes and forms that you’re used to seeing; and how they manifest themselves might be different and, at first, alien to your customs. This journey of discovery is one that you’ll have to undertake consciously if you intend to create a new lifestyle for yourself in Mexico.

Full adoption of any foreign country requires compromise, acceptance, and understanding. Moving to Mexico will oblige you to change habits, surrender certain whims, and accept life situations here for what they are, not what you wish or demand them to be. In return, Mexico could gift new dimensions to your life, for example, by encouraging you to see beyond your current horizon, and connecting you to friends of the kind you never thought possible.

You will witness the kindnesses and wickedness of human nature as the well-documented contrasts present themselves regularly. Situations here will at times cause frustration or annoyance; sometimes they will appear to tease you for no apparent reason.

Mexico can also fill you with an energy and joy that will remain in you always. It’s this spontaneous tapestry that creates the almost mystical allure that has brought foreigners to live here, and live out their lives here, for better and for worse, for centuries. And when —or more precisely, if— you can find peace with all that Mexico is and all that Mexico is not, you will begin to find your place in these lands. If you don’t or discover that you can’t tread that testing path and adapt, Mexico will surely break your endeavors and send you back whence you came.

You might choose a big city, a home in the mountains, or perhaps you’ll find a tranquil place to live beside the ocean, or in the Mexican countryside. The topographical diversity here offers ample choice of locations.

Whatever location you choose, your true place, when you find it in Mexico, will be anchored in the spaces that you will come to adore but which you cannot easily define, and in the feelings you hold for them which cannot be easily expressed.

It has been said that Mexico deposits a certain dust on visitors’ shoes that will cause them to return for good, or never again. The allegory fits well with the contrasts so often cited in lore, but it would be foolhardy to encapsulate that thing, that indefinable attendance which attracts and repels so many to these complex and absorbing lands, in such black-and-white terms. To adapt, you’ll need to turn up with an open mind, with courage and tenacity, and be prepared to craft your own story here—on Mexico’s terms.

If what you’re seeing on the news keeps you away from Mexico, your perceptions have been hijacked before you allowed yourself an opportunity to better understand these lands, and see what others here see: a country in transition, a country which is, by and large, less violent than those places where stones are so readily thrown from glass houses.

Finding your place in Mexico requires due course. There are no shortcuts, no tricks or cheats to download, no instant answers. And as you embark on this journey, you’ll never quite understand how irrelevant all your preconceptions may become as Mexico simultaneously encourages and obliges you to find your peace amidst its contrasts and eccentricities.

If you come to truly embrace Mexico, as its closest friends who are foreign-born to these lands do, it will most likely be through a baptism of fire that will test your character, your mettle, and your heart; through a journey of discovery that brings each new day with a knowing that here is where your life belongs.

Most of Mexico of won’t move its clocks this spring, but clock changes elsewhere may affect your routines or work schedule if they involve meetings with people abroad, or travel.

Mexico provides year-round long daylight hours and the quality of the light here is extraordinary. We’ll publish further details of 2026 clock changes in the March edition of our Mexico newsletter.

This article shares details about the registration rules and process, and we are keeping it regularly updated as new information becomes available. New Year celebrations wrap-up the holiday season
The festive period known as Guadalupe-Reyes, that began on December 12th, draws to a close early in the New Year. January 6th, Dia de Los Reyes Magos —Kings’ Day, or Epiphany— marks the close of the festivities, on an evening traditionally accompanied by family, delicious Rosca de Reyes, and a mug of hot chocolate. If your slice of rosca reveals a plastic doll, traditionally you host a party and serve tamales on February 2nd, Día de la Candelaria.

Qualifying for residency in 2026
In July 2025 new visa guidelines directed Mexican consulates to adopt UMA as part of their residency qualification criteria. Mexican consulates abroad publish their revised criteria in January. We are keeping our guide to financial qualification regularly updated as new information becomes available. If you don’t qualify for residency under economic solvency rules, other routes might be open to you.

Mexican cellphones registration
On December 8, 2025, the Mexican government announced that new rules are coming into effect from January 2026 requiring every Mexican cellphone number (contract and pre-pay) to be associated with verified and registered user.
Update January 12: All Mexico Cellphone Users Must Register by June 30, 2026.

New enforcement related to foreign-plated vehicles
In late 2025 drivers in Baja began reporting on Social Media posts that officers at vehicle checkpoints on the Baja peninsula had been giving warnings to —and in some cases seized vehicles from— people driving foreign-plated cars and who hold Permanent Residency status in Mexico. See this article for context and information.

Peak viewing season for the Monarch Butterflies

Living & Lifestyle insights for December

Insights and tips for better living & lifestyle in Mexico

December festivities
Christmas holiday festivities start early in Mexico, on December 12th, Día de Guadalupe, and traditionally end on January 6th, Día de Los Reyes Magos. The three-and-a-half week festive period, colloquially referred to as Guadalupe-Reyes, encapsulates the winter holiday season in Mexico.

Christmas processions
Posadas Navideñas are the heart of Mexico’s Christmas traditions, which include the breaking of a colorful Piñata. Christmas dinner is traditionally taken on the evening of December 24th. The 25th tends to be a quiet day of rest and repair, and is also a public holiday.

Holiday Closing at Consulates & Immigration Offices

Mexican consulates abroad and immigration offices in Mexico will be closing for the holidays. If your existing residency card expires during the holiday-closing period, you will need to file for a renewal/exchange early in the New Year when offices reopen.

Winter arriving in Mexico
There is a distinct change in the air, that is especially noticeable in the early mornings and evenings, as autumn yields to winter. Winter in Mexico is characterized by mostly dry and bright days with agreeable daytime temperatures. It’s typically warm and comfortable along the coasts and coastal plains. Comfortably warm and sun-filled daytimes are typical in locations situated inland at higher elevations although occasional cold fronts from the north, early mornings and the hours after sundown can feel sharp or cold in the highlands.

The butterflies return to Mexico
The Monarch Butterflies are overwintering in the Oyamel fir tree forests situated in the mountains west of Mexico City. If you’ve been intending to witness this extraordinary natural phenomenon (or return to see it again!) our travel associate can help you plan your visit.

Reminder about Christmas bonuses and tips

When you’re living in Mexico, Christmas is a time to express appreciation to the people who help you throughout the year, and for paying Aguinaldos to your domestic helpers.

Also consider paying a Christmas tip to suppliers who support you throughout the year; examples include:

 • the people who deliver gas to your home;
 • the helpers who deliver drinking water bottles if you use those;
 • the people who collect your garbage each week;
 • the door-keepers if you live in a gated community;
 • the valets if you keep your vehicle parked in a private garage (termed as a pensión in Spanish); and
 • to anyone else who supports you with a regular service throughout the year.

Mexico’s (Bio)CURP
Mexico’s CURP is a unique identifying registration number assigned to every Mexican national and every foreign resident. It’s being made “biometrical” in 2026. This FAQ describes what the CURP is and also covers the new Bio CURP.

Making informed choices
When you’re thinking about moving to Mexico but have questions about how suitable Mexico may be for you, your partner/family, places to live, and key things to consider, a Mexico Lifestyle Consultant offers a structured conversation to help you define your intentions, set a clear direction, and help you to begin making informed choices.

Special Feature: Residency in Mexico 2026

Mexico’s government has been announcing a series of updates and changes related to residency in Mexico. This Special Feature Section summarizes the changes and describes how residency qualification rules, time scales, and fees are changing.

Tighter criteria, higher fees
A legislative change in July 2025 aligned qualification criteria with Mexico’s UMA measurement index; and in November the government announced a 100% increase in residency card fees. See this article for details.

Residents’ proof of address in Mexico
Until recently, all of Mexico’s immigration offices accepted residency filings without applicants routinely demonstrating their proof of address in Mexico. During 2025, immigration offices in some Mexican states started to routinely ask applicants for evidence of a residential address in Mexico. This article describes the changing pattern and offers guidance for applicants as well as those with existing residency status.

Appointment lead times
Lead times for appointments at Mexican consulates abroad and at immigration offices in Mexico became longer during the second half of 2025. People who obtained appointments within a day or two in 2024 and were expecting the same this year have need to rework their scheduling. See our article about appointments at consulates and immigration offices for more details.

Processing timescales
As we mentioned in some Newsletters earlier in 2025, processing time scales for Family Unit applications are taking longer now as the INM conducts additional checks, including home visits, for these. Issuance of residency cards on the same day as the appointment can still happen, but some offices are routinely taking 1-3 weeks to process filings, and applicants should not expect same-day resolution of their filings by default in 2026.

Making travel and other arrangements
We have always recommended and continue to advise readers not to make travel or other arrangements before you have an appointment date and/or a visa stamp(s) or residency card(s) issued. (Once your residency card is issued, you’ll need it to enter and exit Mexico.)

Applying for and managing your Mexico residency card
When you intend to apply for the first time (or re-apply), our guide to applying for residency in Mexico gives a detailed summary of the process. For those who already have a residency card, learn about the renewal rules and process for residency cards. If your residency card has expired, read this. If your card is lost or damaged, read this.

Immigration Assistance

When you need assistance and practical support with a first-time Mexico residency application, an existing residency renewal, visa or card exchanges, and managing your existing residency status—our immigration associates can help.

Learn more about how their services save you time and help to avoid common mistakes made by applicants.

Interior design for your home in Mexico
Your home’s interior design ought to inspire and lift you every day, and when you move to Mexico and begin to think about and create your dwelling spaces, it’s sensible to take inspiration from the natural habitats that surround your house, as well as the local environment, and regional culture. Read about how an experienced interior designer can help you to (re)form the interior spaces of your home and prevent you from making material mistakes along the way.

Annual updates to our content
During December and January each year we review time-sensitive articles and guides related to salaries, inflation, the Mexican peso, UMAs, the cost of living, and residency qualification, and update them as reliable data/information become available. Our extensive guides to living and lifestyle in Mexico are continuously updated throughout the year.

Winter Solstice, Plenty of Light

December 21st is the ‘shortest’ day of the year in Mexico, although as our article about Mexico’s long daylight hours describes, you’ll enjoy plenty of daylight throughout the winter (early risers benefit especially) and the quality of the light here is extraordinary. The agreeable climate is one of they key reasons many people choose to overwinter in Mexico.

Winter holiday road trips in Mexico
Major roads and highways get busy across Mexico during the Christmas holiday period, especially major trunk routes connecting the USA with Mexico, and all roads connecting Mexico City to key regions in the provinces, particularly roads leading out from the capital: north to Queretaro/Guanajuato; west to Morelia and Guadalajara; south to Cuernavaca and Acapulco; and east/southeast to Veracruz, Puebla, and the Yucatán peninsula. When the holiday season draws to a close roads into Mexico City on these routes become severely congested.

Health insurance options when you’re in Mexico
Readers often ask us about what options exist to get health coverage while they’re in Mexico. The options vary depending on the time you intend to spend in Mexico, your preferences regarding coverage levels, and your available budget. Our article about health and medical coverages in Mexico describes the choices available and the box below summarizes key points.

Living & Lifestyle insights for November

Insights and tips for better living & lifestyle in Mexico

Day of the Dead —that is a celebration of the continuity of life— is one of Mexico’s most important religious holidays, celebrated on November 1st & 2nd. November 2nd is a public holiday, that falls on a Sunday this year. Traditions include ofrendas, artistic Catrina skulls, delicious pan de muerto, cemeteries dressed in Cempaxochitl flowers, and a Mexican version of Trick or Treat.

Revolution Day holiday: November is host to one of Mexico’s three long-weekend holidays that were introduced over a decade ago and are well-received. The one that falls in November marks Mexico’s revolution and also forms part of “El Buen Fin,” (Mexico’s equivalent of the ‘Black Friday’ shopping event in the US) that this year officially runs from Nov 13 to 17. The holiday falls on Monday, November 17, although retailers in physical stores and online typically launch their promotions in the two weeks leading up to the holiday weekend.

Autumnal Clock Changes 2025

Europe moved its clocks back again by one hour on Sunday, October 26, and the US & Canada move clocks back by one hour on Sunday November 2. Most of Mexico no longer moves its clocks, but clock changes elsewhere will create time differences you may need to take into account from late October onwards—see this article for details.

Out with the wet and in with the dry: Mexico’s rain season, that affects much of the mainland (but not the Baja peninsula) typically begins in May/June and ends in October, sometimes spilling into November. This year’s abundant rain season, that began in May, appears to have ended in late October. Learn about the rainy season and dry season, and how to live well with and without the rains.

The butterflies return to Mexico: The Monarch Butterflies return in November to the Oyamel fir tree forests situated in the mountains west of Mexico City, and if you’ve been intending to witness this extraordinary natural phenomenon (or return to see it again!) our travel associate can help you plan your visit.

Cooler temperatures in the fall and winter: One of the great attractions about visiting and living in Mexico is that the country enjoys agreeable climates year-round, but it’s worth taking note that some areas can get cool or cold, particularly after sundown, during the fall and winter months. Learn about the places that can get cooler or cold; we also share advice about keeping your home warm.

Residents’ proof of address in Mexico

Under the current immigration rules, there is no stipulated minimum time you must be physically present in Mexico each year to retain your Temporary or Permanent residency status and, until recently, all of Mexico’s immigration offices accepted residency filings without applicants routinely demonstrating their proof of address in Mexico.

Only in cases where the filing was unclear or suspect in some way would evidence of an address be sought as part of additional information requested at the time of filing.

However, immigration offices in some Mexican states have started to routinely ask applicants for evidence of a residential address in Mexico. This article describes the changing pattern and offers advice for applicants as well as those people with existing residency status.

Living & Lifestyle insights for September

Insights and tips for better living & lifestyle in Mexico

Mexico celebrates its independence in September
By late August, vendors are out on busy street corners selling flags and other patriotic paraphernalia, heralding that Mexico’s Independence Day, one of the country’s most important holidays, is on the horizon. Mexico’s independence is traditionally celebrated with El Grito on the eve of September 15th and September 16th is a Public Holiday. This year, the 15th falls on Monday and that will likely create an unofficial extended long-weekend holiday for many, colloquially referred to as a puente.

Postal deliveries from Mexico to the United States suspended

Correos de México, the country’s national mail service, has “temporarily suspended” the sending of post to the United States, citing new tariff rules that made the customs-treatment of packages unclear. The SRE, Mexico’s equivalent of the US State Department, put out a press statement about the matter, and various media are running stories. In a related article published by El Economista, DHL was quoted as saying that documents and packages containing personal gifts valued at less that US$100 were unaffected. Check with your local post office or courier if you intend to send documents or parcels from the Mexico to the USA.

Seasonal changes
This year’s rain season, that affects much of the country’s mainland, has been especially abundant, and storms continue to drench the landscape. September tends to be one of the wettest months of the year across the mainland. The autumn equinox this month heralds the seasonal turning point as the halcyon days of summer yield to fall’s changeable climate. Sweltering summer temperatures along the coastal plains begin to moderate, and some living in the mountain highlands may begin to swap summer shorts for warmer attire, especially during early mornings and late evenings that become noticeably cooler starting in October.

Applying for Permanent Residency in Mexico
Several readers who are not retired have recently contacted us asking about applying for Permanent Residency in Mexico. Mexican consulates require that applicants applying for Permanent Residency be of retirement age/drawing a pension to qualify. If you don’t qualify for Permanent Residency right away, you can apply for Temporary Residency first and, after holding that for four consecutive years, you may apply to change it for Permanent Residency.

Shopping for food in Mexico
Mexico’s cuisine is varied, colorful, and bursting with flavor, although when living abroad most people at least occasionally enjoy having a ‘taste of home.’ Mexico offers plenty of choice when it comes to shopping for food and other things and in addition to a wide range of open-air markets, big brand retailers, and budget stores, Mexico also offers specialist retail supermarkets that stock fancy foods and goods, including imported items that you won’t find elsewhere.

Applying for and managing your Mexico residency card
If you intend to apply for the first time (or re-apply), our guide to applying for residency in Mexico gives a detailed summary of the process. If you already have your residency card, learn about the renewal rules and process for residency cards. If your residency card has expired, read this. Mexico is host to the extraordinary Monarch Butterflies that migrate each year from the northern reaches of the continent to overwinter in the Oyamel fir tree forests situated in the mountains west of Mexico City. A visit to the butterfly sanctuaries is a highlight of any visit to Mexico during the late autumn and winter months. The butterflies begin arriving in November, and leave in March. Peak viewing season is between mid-January and late February. Our travel associate can help you to make the most of your visit to see the butterflies this season.

Residency cards for minors
Mexico has special rules for residency cards issued to minors—legally defined as children under the age of 18 years. The rules are described in detail in this article, although essentially:

Living & Lifestyle insights for June

Insights and tips for better living & lifestyle in Mexico

Summertime in Mexico — June 21st heralds the arrival of summer in Mexico. Some refreshing rains have already started to sweep across parts the mainland and are beginning to break the long-dry spell of the winter and early spring—settling the dust and propelling fragrances into the air as the flora bloom and flourish. Most of Mexico abandoned clock changes in 2022, but the extraordinary light continues to extend into the evenings here.

Mosquito defense — The summer heat and rains bring a proliferation of mosquitoes, which are most prevalent in Mexico between April and November. Their numbers swell significantly between June to October as the females are driven to fetch blood that contains the iron they need to produce their eggs. We offer practical advice for dealing with mosquitoes in Mexico.
