Autumn: clock changes & seasonal transition
The month of October heralds an unmistakable change from summer to autumn across Mexico, as temperatures cool markedly along the coastal plains and lowlands, and early mornings and evenings begin to feel distinctly crisp at higher elevations. Most of Mexico no longer moves its clocks, but clock changes elsewhere will create time differences you may need to take into account when others’ clocks move back on October 26 (Europe) and November 2 (US/Canada)—see this article for details.
Tail end of the rain season
This year’s rain season began a bit earlier than usual; typically the rains last through mid-to-late October, and sometimes spill over into November. When the rains leave, the landscapes gradually dry out and change color to amber and brown; by late January the effects of the dry season can be readily felt in the air. Planning ahead for Day of the Dead
One of Mexico’s most important —and well attended— religious festivals is Day of the Dead, celebrated on the 1st and 2nd of November each year, and contemporarily also encapsulates Halloween on October 31. This year, the events fall over a weekend, so if you intend to participate we recommend you plan your travels and accommodations in advance, and exercise patience when traveling along roads and highways.
Reminder about Mexican cell phone registration
Customers using a pre-pay (pay-as-you-go) Mexican cell phone must register their phone. The timetable for disconnection of unregistered phones is staggered between August and December 2026 based on the last digit of the cellphone’s line number. The next wave of disconnections are slated for October 15 and 30—for cellphone numbers ending with a 4, and 5, respectively. Phones on a contract do not need to be registered.
Overwintering in Mexico
With the summer passed, people who live in Mexico part-time, often through the winter months, will be planning their return. A significant number of people continue to live in Mexico on a part-time basis, most typically arriving during the fall season to enjoy warm or temperate climates in Mexico during the winter and early spring. The Monarch butterflies return in the autumn
Mexico is host to the extraordinary Monarch Butterflies that migrate each year from the northern reaches of the continent to overwinter in the Oyamel fir tree forests situated in the mountains west of Mexico City. A visit to the butterfly sanctuaries is a highlight of any visit to Mexico during the late autumn and winter months. The butterflies begin arriving in November, and leave in March. Peak viewing season is between mid-January and late February, when temperatures rise and the butterflies are more active. Most people in Mexico get their high-speed internet at home using a landline, furnished by Telmex or one of the cable companies. Those living in areas where landlines are not available but where there are cell phone towers present may opt to use a cellular home internet service.
