What are the tax obligations once you become a permanent resident? I don’t want to pay income taxes twice, once to the US and once to Mexico.

Hi Collette,

If you are Permanent Residents holding residency CARDS, then the Visa Stickers in your passports are no longer relevant as they have been exchanged for residency cards already and you no longer need those visa stickers.

If you have not yet filed to exchange your Visa Stickers for cards, you MUST do this in Mexico before the passport/visas expire and within 30 days of your arrival date to Mexico.

My husband and I are permanent residents of Mexico. Our Canadian passports are up for renewal. We have the Mexican Visa attached in our passport. What do we do to renew the visa also? Thankyou for your help.

Hi,

Article 164 of Mexico’s Immigration Law includes this statement:
“Los titulares de las condiciones de estancia de visitante por razones humanitarias y de residente permanente cuentan implícitamente con permiso de trabajo.”

In relation to the permanent residency visa through the ‘family reunification’ route, can you confirm if the permanent residency visa includes the right to work? The information seems to contradict what is written here: https://embamex.sre.gob.mx/espana/?option=com_content&view=article&id=512

In reply to Jerry Wilhite. I am a permanent of Mexico. I am a citizen of the United Staes. I am trying to find out if I can stay beyond 180 days with no consequences from the Us immigration or any agency of the United States. I know there is no problem with Mexico, but does the United States require me to return in 180 days? I have been trying to find an answer and I have until June 23, 2025 before I have to leave.
