No you do not need to return to the US for any specific time period. You may remain in Mexico as long as you wish, and return to the US at will, without restriction.

Thanks for sharing your experience. When registering as a foreigner using the online (automated) system, the process asks for a valid passport, not a residency card. If you register in person at a customer service center, they might accept a residency card as they did in your case.

This may be true is some areas in Mexico, but in Tlaxcala state when I was asked to present my INE, I presented my permanent resident card which was accepted.

I have a UDC plated vehicle with expired TIP. I received my permanente a year or so ago.. My question is can I get a Seguro Retorno 5 day permit and will I be fined for letting my TIP expire and if so, how much? This is a 30 year old Honda that I need to drive out.Thanks in advance

Another point – if you let your TIP expire, my understanding is that you may be barred from bring another vehicle into Mexico (or trying to return with that same vehicle), because you did not abide by the rules of the TIP.
If the TIP is expired and you want to keep the vehicle, you can get “safe passage” paperwork which gives you some number of days to remove the vehicle from Mexico without it being seized along the way. Otherwise, you’re just taking your chances driving around in an illegal vehicle which could be taken from you. If you removed it via “safe passage” at least you could still sell it for whatever it’s worth in the US.
