Easier Access to More of Mexico
Mexico is likely to be even more accessible from a greater number of US cities in the future.  The move to open more routes from the US to Mexican cities is being driven by a US-Mexico air agreement, growing numbers of tourists traveling to Mexico, and airline’s desire to open new routes outside of the increasingly competitive low-cost US domestic flight markets.
But there’s something else that’s providing an impetus for the apeture of new routes: travelers are beginning to discover that Mexico is much more than just a beach destination and want to travel to the places in Mexico which offer a wider variety of activities and experiences, especially nature and adventure experiences.
The routes being considered connect to places like La Paz, Loreto and Los Mochis: a reflection of the growing interest in sports fishing, diving and adventure travel experiences available in Baja and the amazing Copper Canyon and Train Ride, which has a terminus in the otherwise unremarkable port city of Los Mochis.
Because of the way Mexico’s domestic flight markets operate, Mexico City has long been a “hub” which travelers must pass-through en route to other places using a limited number of carriers charging near-monopoly prices. Point-to-point flights between domestic cities have been few.  Mexico is opening up its airline market so, with the advent of low-cost point-to-point flights in Mexico itself, change is on the wind bringing more travel options with it.  New routes are opening up and prices are becoming more competitive.
Several US carriers are in negotiations with the US Department of Transport to get new routes approved, although Delta is spear-heading the movement.  Most of the new flights Delta hopes to launch are expected to fly out of its hub in Atlanta, although Boston, New York and Washington DC will also have direct flights to Mexico as well.
This is good news for travelers.  As new routes are opened up from the US to cities in Mexico other than the capital, and Mexico’s fledgling low-cost carriers begin to establish themselves, passengers will have more choice at lower cost.
This means that travelers from the US (or travelers going to Mexico via the US) will be able to fly to more places in Mexico than before; and, once they are in Mexico, getting from where they are to other desirable destinations should be possible and less expensive than ever.
