Mexico’s communications network is one of the most well developed in all of Latin America.   This convenience comes at a price, as telephone costs in Mexico are relatively expensive.  There are alternatives and if you know where to look and how to buy, you can save a lot of money…

Telmex, Mexico’s incumbent Telco, has a tight grip on the Mexican communications market, despite the opening up of its communications network to competition.  As a result, telephone charges in Mexico are still high by American and European standards, and relative to local earnings — very high.

We have recently updated our Guide to Communications in Mexico and, during the course of our research, we were pleasantly surprised to learn that in the last couple of years, a good selection of alternative carriers and services have sprung up that are now offering real telecoms choice to people traveling and those living in Mexico.

Our guide discusses the range of services often used by travelers and tells you how to get the best deal when you visit Mexico.

Mobile telephony is not cheap in Mexico and if you roam with your home-based cell phone the charges can be enormous.  Our guide shows you some alternatives to high international mobile roaming charges.

We have also included the latest information about long-distance calling cards as well services offered by voice telephony over Internet – you may have heard of Skype, for example – we’ll tell you about how to use the Internet to your advantage in Mexico.

You may not see these alternative services advertised frequently, as most high-profile telecom marketing in Mexico is dominated by the incumbent.

However, lower cost alternatives do exist and our guide will signpost your way to them.
