Mexico Car Rental Shake-up

Historically, car rental rates in Mexico have been higher in comparison with car rental rates offered in the USA. However, the market has been shifting: rates in the US have been steadily increasing in recent years, narrowing the gap and, of late, car rental rates in Mexico have begun to decrease. Mexperience is among the first to pass on the lower rates to customers.
Our associate travel provision company, ETS (a division of BestDay, Mexico’s premiere travel company), recently negotiated an agreement with Hertz Mexico. So as of now, all Mexico car rentals arranged via Mexperience are supplied by Hertz agencies. This new arrangement enables us to offer customers a much wider range of vehicles at a far greater number of locations across the entire country. Indeed, we now offer car rentals from every key Mexican airport as well as many principal towns and cities across Mexico.
In addition to the wider choice of vehicles and geographical coverage, we are offering some very attractive rates to the market.
For example, you can now rent an economy car for less than US$11 a day and a compact car for less than US$14 a day. Larger vehicles are also available. The rates include third-party insurance (that is compulsory in Mexico), unlimited mileage as well as taxes. To avail yourself of these low rates, you must pre-pay your reservation; there are no refunds for cancellations 72 hours or less before the scheduled arrival date; there are no refunds for no-shows and no refunds for unused days if you return the car before your scheduled return date.
You’ll have the option, at the agency counter, to purchase additional insurance coverage for the vehicle. Some credit and charge cards offer ‘free’ car rental insurance as part of the benefits package that comes with being a card-holder; check with your financial institution as, if yours does, you can save yourself a decent sum on insurance fees. Although the additional insurance is optional, we recommend you cover your liabilities for the vehicle in the event of a mishap during your rental period.
A small, economy, car is ideal for one or two travelers and their baggage, for short-distance (day) trips around the area you’re staying at, or perhaps for getting away for a night or two. A compact car is a better choice if you have three people, or if you want to undertake a regional tour of no more than a couple of hundred miles. For larger parties, or when you have more baggage or you want a higher level of comfort, choose a larger vehicle. If you’re planning an extensive regional or multi-region road trip with a considerable amount of long-distance driving, we recommend a larger vehicle for your party’s safety and comfort.
Some travelers want to rent a car from a certain location (often an arrival airport), take a road trip, and then drop-off the vehicle at a different location. This can be done, but there exists an additional “drop-off” charge in addition to the rental charges. The charge covers the cost of returning the vehicle to the original agency it was hired from and is therefore calculated on a price-per-mile basis. The farther away the drop-off agency is, the higher the fee. Budget about 60 US cents per mile; so if you plan to drop-off the car 300 miles away from your original location, your additional charge will be about US$180. To arrange one-way rentals, please call our sales reservations team.
If you want a rental car and driver, this can also be arranged by calling our sales reservations team. Fees depend upon the location and the duration of the car rental. This option can get expensive, so as an alternative consider using local taxis which are affordable in Mexico or, for ground transportation to and from your hotel, consider an airport shuttle instead.
