Internet Access on Mexico’s Buses

As we have written about before now, traveling by bus in Mexico is a world-away from traveling by bus in the USA or UK.  Forget cramped seats and no legroom: the executive-class buses which connect towns and cities across Mexico offer luxuriously comfortable passenger cabins with just twenty-four wide seats on board which recline right back into a near-flat position: think of business class on an airline.

Not only are buses in Mexico a comfortable travel choice, they are also very affordable.  Mexico City to Acapulco on Estrella de Oro’s executive Diamante service is less than $500 pesos (US$39) each way – that’s less than the toll booths will add up to if you drive the route in a car; ETN’s executive service from Mexico City to the colonial city of Morelia is less than $350 pesos (US$27).

And now, there’s another incentive to take Mexico’s executive-class bus services seriously when you are planning your travels in Mexico: free, high-speed, internet access on board.

When you travel on ETN, a bus company operating executive-class services between Mexico City, Michoacán State (west of Mexico City), north-west Mexico, colonial heartland cities, Guadalajara, and Puerto Vallarta, you can get your laptop or other WiFi-enabled device out to send and receive email, surf the Internet and even make phone calls, using a service like Skype, from the comfort of your seat.

You can learn all about how to bus across Mexico on our comprehensive guide to bus travel in Mexico, which also includes a list of all the main bus operators and links to their websites, where available.

More bus companies will surely follow ETN’s lead and offer WiFi services on board, and we’ll update readers as we learn about other operators which introduce a WiFi service on their buses.  If you have traveled on a bus line other than ETN that you know offers reliable WiFi on board, please take a moment to leave a comment on this blog about your experience.
