There exist many blogs (and web sites) which focus on a specific region of Mexico, but Yucatan Living, created and managed by Ellen and Jim Fields, is in a class of its own.
Ellen and Jim are expats from the States, professional veterans from the dot-com-boom era who gave up their corporate jobs and moved their life situations to the beautiful colonial city of Merida, in Mexico’s culturally-rich and fertile Yucatan region.
Ellen and Jim are the embodiment of expatriate ‘knowledge workers’ who have created a thriving business in Mexico; having set up a company to create and manage web sites for local companies, they also created Yucatan Living, their flagship project which enables its visitors to learn about – and keep abreast with – all things Yucatan.
Much of the information presented reflects theirs and others real-life experiences, and so what you see published here isn’t textbook theory but instead practical and well thought-out articles which are beautifully presented for good measure.
The site’s primary focus is on Merida, although other cities, features and attractions situated across the region are also covered in some detail.
The pictures on the website are testimony to the author’s dexterity with a camera lens, and the writing style is exceptional. There is a fine art to writing blog articles in a way that shares a personal touch without slipping into the realms of self-indulgence, and the writing style employed on Yucatan Living consistently practises the fine art very skilfully: its style is engaging, informative and entertaining.
One of the trademark design features of this site is the large, almost screen-length photo which appears at the top of every page. The pictures, which depict a panoply of scenes from around the Yucatan, change each time a new page is loaded or if the existing page is refreshed.
Yucatan Living does exactly what it says on the tin: it’s a comprehensive blog website concerned exclusively with proffering local knowledge about living, working and retirement in the Yucatan region of Mexico. Topics include ‘Daily Life’, ‘History’, and ‘Events’; culture and art feature prominently, and the work also includes some excellent features like one-to-one interviews with expats, who share their real-life insights into the practicalities of moving to, and living in, the Yucatan. The ‘Yucatan Survivor’ topic features articles dealing with living practicalities such as banking, insurance, pets, and getting your US vehicle re-plated.
Merida and the Yucatan region has, in recent years, emerged as one of the country’s most appealing destinations for expatriates who want to relocate to Mexico. The passionate work being undertaken by Ellen and Jim – the fruits of which may be enjoyed on their Yucatan Living blog – must undoubtedly be having an influence on the number of new expatriate arrivals to the region, by encouraging people from around the world to consider the Yucatan as a place to ‘live, work and play’ (to quote the blog’s sub-title) and, moreover, by enabling readers to make timely and informed choices to work their relocation aspirations into being.
If you are planning to move to Mexico, and are considering Merida and the Yucatan region as a base to live, work or retire, Yucatan Living is a fine blog resource, and we’re pleased to recommend it to our readers.
