Mexican Beers
A large range and variety of beers are brewed in Mexico, and some of them are top selling beers in markets other than Mexico, including the USA, Canada, Europe and Australasia.
There are two main breweries in Mexico: Grupo Modelo and Cerveceria Cuauhtemoc Moctezuma. Grupo Modelo's key export product is Corona, and Cerveceria Cuauhtemoc Moctezuma exports Sol. This guide introduces you to the most popular Mexican beers, so you can look out for them on your next trip to Mexico, or next time you're at the supermarket in your home country!
Grupo Modelo's Principal Beers
Corona
Corona is a light lager beer, and is the top selling Mexican beer abroad. Corona is widely available in the UK at pubs, clubs and supermarkets.
Negra Modelo
Negra Modelo is a dark beer, very smooth and described as a "Vienna-Munich" type beer by the brewer.
Modelo Especial
Modelo Especial is a lager beer (described as a Pilsner lager by the brewer) and has a slightly richer taste than Corona.
Victoria
Victoria is described as Pilsner-Vienna type beer by the brewer, and is a cross between a light lager and a dark beer.
Cuauhtemoc Moctezuma's Principal Beers
Sol
Sol is Corona's main competitor in the market, and like Corona it is a light, tasty lager beer.
Tecate
Tecate is a lager beer, light, but with a shaper and stronger taste than Sol.
XX
"Dos Equis" is a light lager beer.
Bohemia
Bohemia competes with Modelo Especial and is a light, rich lager beer.
Noche Buena
If you are in Mexico during the Christmas period, then look out for this beer that is only sold during the festive season. Translated it means "Christmas Eve", and is a dark, rich beer.
